Giant Backpack Party in South Portland Celebrates Children and Community Service

These Kids Earned Their Back-to-School LLBean Backpacks by Doing Community Service!

What: Back to School Barbecue Celebration

Where: Redbank Community Park and Gym, South Portland

When: Saturday, August 20th from 11am until 1pm

SOUTH PORTLAND (August, 2016) – Children in the Redbank and Brick Hill neighborhoods of South Portland will celebrate earning their backpacks, donated by LLBean, at a barbecue event Saturday, 11am until 1pm at the Redbank Community Park.  There’ll be barbecue, games, face-painting, and free back-to-school haircuts.

Children, ages 3 to those entering 5th grade were invited to perform six tasks over the summer: Be helpful to a neighbor; Get active; Help in the neighborhood; Make a new friend; Help you parents; and Tell us what someone else did for you. They completed a form that was signed by a parent and in return they receive an LLBean backpack filled with school supplies.

Please join us for this fun event. Talk to kids and families about how they’re getting involved in their neighborhoods. This is part of The Opportunity Alliance’s resident led community building efforts in neighborhoods throughout the greater Portland area in collaboration with multiple community partners including the Eastpoint Christian Church of Portland.
